표상, 언어, 그리고 합리성

이 글에서 논자는 언어에 대한 반표상주의적인 관점과 실천적 이론 간의 연관성을 고찰해 보았다. 언어가 진리를 표상하는 매개물이라는 관점에서 이론의 목표는 무엇이 참이고 어떤 실천이 합리적인 것인가를 밝히는 것이었다. 그러나 언어가 표상하는 대상이 고정되어 있는 것이 아니라면 그런 이론의 목표는 재고되어야 할 것으로 보인다. 예컨대 합리성이라는 단어의 표상은 무엇인가? 언어가 역사성을 갖는다는 점을 인정한다면 합리성이라는 말의 의미를 둘러싼 경계도 고정되어 있는 것으로 볼 수 없다. 이런 고찰을 위해 논자는 우선 진리 담론과 합리성이라는 개념의 관계를 살펴보고, 데이빗슨과 로티 사이에서 벌어진 진리론을 둘러싼 논쟁의 쟁점을 정리해 보았다. 다음으로 논자는 반표상주의 언어관을 주장하고 있는 로티가 ‘표상’이라는 개념을 어떻게 사용하고 있는지 검토하고 반표상주의 언어관을 채택할 경우 실천적 이론의 목표는 무엇이 되어야 하는가를 논구하였다. 마지막으로 언어를 둘러싼 우리의 철학적 물음은 더 이상 표상적 진리에 관한 것이 아니라 새로운 서술을 가능하게 함으로써 합리성의 경계를 확장시킬 은유의 의의에 대한 것이 되어야 한다는 것을 주장했다. 이것은 우리가 더 이상 보편 언어에 대한 강박을 가질 필요가 없으며, 표상주의적 합리성에서 벗어나게 될 것에 대한 불안을 짊어질 필요가 없다는 것을 함축한다.
Abstract
In this paper, I have tried to figure out the relationship between the anti-representational point of view on language and the theory of practice. Those who believe that the language is the medium which represents truth of the objective world would regard finding what truth is and which practice is rational as the goal of the theory. However, if the language does not represent the objective world which is fixed, we would better reconsider the goal of the practical theory. We could ask what the representation of the word ‘rationality’ is. If we accept that language is something historical, we could not draw clearly the boundary of the meaning of rationality. Trying to argue that the goal of the theoretical investigation could not be truth but a kind of prophecy, I have reviewed the arguments about truth which was held between Davidson and Rorty. And I have suggested Castoriadis' and Unger's points of view on the concept of rationality as good examples of anti-representational stance. I believe that it would be better for us to escape from the obsession with the idea that we have to find out the universal language which represents truth.
