전략적 유연성을 고려한 기업 R&D 투자가치분석

초록
기업이 보유한 특허와 기술이 기업의 생사에 큰 영향을 미치는 사례를 경험하며, 이제 기업의 R&D 능력과 성과는 기업의 주요 자산으로 인식되고 있다. 하지만 기업이 보유 기술의 사업화를 결정하기 위해서는 외부 시장상황, 대체 기술, 기업의 자금력 등 많은 요소들이 고려되어야 한다. 이러한 이유로, 업종을 불문하고 기술개발이 완료되어 특허를 취득한 후에도 기업 내․외부 사정에 의해 사업화를 지연하거나 포기하는 경우도 상당수 발생하게 된다. 하지만 같은 조건이라도 업종과 기술의 특성에 의해 기업이 기술 사업화를 지연이나 포기하는 것이 합리적인 선택일수도, 혹은 아닐 수도 있다. 그러므로 본 논문은 기술사업화에 있어서 각 업종과 관련기술의 특성을 고려하여 기술 사업화 투자 시기에 대한 결정이 어떻게 이루어져야 되는지 분석하였다. 분석을 위해 산업 업종별로 기술사업화 과정을 공통의 시나리오로 가정하여 실물옵션 평가 방법을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 업종에 따라서 같은 조건에서도 투자지연 선택이 전체 프로젝트 가치에 영향을 주는 정도가 다름을 알 수 있었다. 그 동안 실물옵션을 통해 업종간 특성을 분석하고자 한 대부분의 연구에서는 업종간 차이를 설명하기 위해 기초자산의 변동성을 사용하였다. 그러나 본 연구 결과에 따르면, 업종간 변동성 차이뿐만 아니라 업종이 가지고 있는 기술 특성과 생산 방식을 고려한 전략적 유연성에 따라 실물옵션 가치가 크게 달라진다는 결과를 도출할 수 있었다. 즉, 기초자산의 변동성 차이뿐만 아니라 해당 업종과 관련 기술의 특성을 고려해야 합리적인 기술 사업화 전략을 선택할 수 있다는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper explores the application of real options valuation methods for corporate R&D investment using strategic flexibility within the context of R&D intensive industries in Korea. It analyzes how firms’ strategic decisions such as deferring investment, abandoning mass production and liquidating technology, along with the rate of success of technology development, affect the overall valuation of R&D projects in the process of successful technology commercialization. While previous research using real options approach has pointed to the volatility of underlying assets to explain discrepancies in valuation among industries, this study shows that real options values vary widely not only owing to differences in volatility among industries but also due to strategic flexibility that reflects technological attributes and the production process unique to an industry. The findings suggest that it is not rational to make a strategic decision for commercialization of technology solely based on differences in market volatility.
