J. M. Synge is probably one of the greatest playwrights Ireland has everhad. But he has often been slighted by many, including Joyce, but Yeats seems tohave found him the greatest of all playwrights in his time. The paper claims thatSynge was well prepared to write great plays even before he visited Aran, and itoffers his prose work The Aran Islands as evidence. It is already a great piece ofwork, very poetic and full of observations and feelings and thoughts, which hedraws for the plays he is to write.
