A Study on Debate of Expanding the GMO Labeling

Since 2001 NGOs have proposed the expanded GMO labeling system because of consumers right, especially, right to know and choose. On the contrary, food industries have reacted it because of cost burden increase and safety assessment. This debate faced new conditions. CODEX passed the guidelines of GMO labeling. In addition, the US, the most strenuous opponent, decided to end the opposition to GM labelling. In 2013, members of the National Assembly submitted 3 amendments of Food Sanitation Act, focused on expanding GMO labeling system. This means we have to accept the change and to expand the GMO labeling without exception. However, these 3 amendments have their own advantages and disadvantages. In considering how the law might be reformed, the most important thing is the guarantee of the consumers right in reviewing them. Therefore, consumers right is the key criterion in GMO labeling issues and it is expanding the GMO labeling system.
