Recent trend in the standard of picking out a compact car and relevant buying pattern are changing. As the reasonable consumption of what is environment-friendly, high-quality, and highly sensible increases, so does the consumers’ demand for a small, but high-performance compact car. The new generation who has a focus on emotional values when consuming something analyze the real-time information, and make their own consuming code that emphasizes the personality of a car by combining various options. The concept of a compact car is, thus, assessed and selected in accordance with each individual’s experience and values, not simply with its price or size. As the preference, the meaning, and the concept of a compact car have been changing like this, it is now needed to develop a compact car development strategy which goes with the new changing market. Especially because the car business is rapidly changing due to the fusion of different technologies, products, and industries, the product design strategy which induces smart choices making sure of the balance between functional and symbolic values. In this sense, this research analyzes the buying patterns and consumption trend of the new emerging generation, and redefines the compact car’s concept, values, usabilities, and the meaning in the perspective of the technologies revolving around cars and IT combined together. Additionally, this research tries to predict which direction the future compact car design is going in by analyzing examples of both the domestic and international car makers.
