초록
In these days various social problems such as pollution, resource depletion, global warming, socio–economic polarization, and envi- ronmental degradation threaten the earth. In this background the concept of sustainable development emerged as a result of reflection on the indiscriminate growth. Sustainable development needs social responsibility of Christian churches as well as countries and corpora- tions in the world. In civil society, the governance is required as the key element to achieve sustainable development. In order to perform social responsibilities, the Christian church will have to figure out ways to strengthen participation in the local governance for the sus- tainable development. This article investigates the social role of churches for the sustain- able society focusing on the governance in civil society. To do this, firstly, I explore the social responsibility for the sustainable life com- munity. Secondly, I examine the relationship between civil society and governance as the alternative for building sustainable society. Thirdly, I find ways to promote participation in community welfare governance as the social responsibility of churches for the local com- munity. Based on the results, my proposal consists of the following: 1) church’s participating and motivating in community welfare, 2) net- working relationship based on collaborative partnership with local community and trust building with participants in governance, strengthening support for church’s administration and funds in build- ing up governance, and 4) empowering church’s welfare organization and church members.
