격물치지론을 통해서 본 교과의 재음미와 인격교육: M박사의 편지에 대한 뒤늦은 답장

이 글은 격물치지의 현재적 지평을 두고 이루어진 두 연구자(M과 J) 사이의 편지를 통한 대화에서 출발하였다. 두 연구자는 1997년부터 학문적 교류를 이어오고 있는 동학이며, 이 논문은 주로 연구자 J의 격물치지 공부에 관한 자전적 술회를 중심으로 하고 있다는 점에서 질적 접근에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다. 우선 이 글에서는 주희의 격물치지론을 기질이라는 현실적 한계를 지닌 ‘사람’과 리(理)가 깃들어 있는 ‘세상’ 사이의 화음으로 본다. 격물치지가 단지 세상의 이치를 밝히는(窮理)데에 그치지 않고, 기질을 넘어서려는 한 사람의 치열한 노력으로 해석되어야 하는 이유는 주희와 그의 학문적 동지들 사이에서 오간 편지를 통해 확인될 수 있다. 이 글을 편지 형식으로 쓴 까닭도 주희의 목소리를 좀 더 생동감 있게 들어 보고자 하는 바람 때문이었다. 이 글에서는 특히 격물치지가 관념의 세계에서 논리적으로 구성된 결과물이 아니라 실제적 체험의 산물임을 보이기 위하여, 그 한 범례로서 퇴계의 ‘리자도(理自到)’에 관한 설을 분석하였다. 이상과 같은 연구 과정을 통하여 격물치지가 교과중심주의에서 파생하는 현대교육의 한계를 비판적으로 재검토할 수 있는 바탕이 될 수 있음을 제안하였다.
Abstract
This paper opens with the letter from doctor M who was the academic colleague of doctor J (the author of the paper). His first letter consists of three questions on the nature of ge-wu-zhi-zhi(格物致知) theory and its contemporary implications, by which he tries to reinterpret the status of school subject matter in education. The paper has a kind of autobiographical approach in that it is mainly based on doctor J’s experience of studying ge-wu-zhi-zhi theory. In the paper, ge-wu-zhi-zhi theory is conceptualized as a harmonious transaction between human being and the world. According to Zhu Xi, there exists Li(理) as an ultimate reality which creates and regulates everything in the universe. But it can be seldom exposed to human being who is confined to his qi-zhi-zhi-xing(氣質之性). In order to recover the original brilliance of our xing, ben-ran-zhi-xing(本然之性), we have to make an effort to overcome the limitation of qi-zhi-zhi-xing. This process can be called self-cultivation. Ge-wu-zhi-zhi theory is uniquely designed for it. If there is no such process, human being and the world could not completely transact with each other. Zhu Xi's ge-wu-zhi-zhi theory suggests the unique way from the realm of a saint who has fully realized his ben-ran-zhi-xing. It allows us to rethink school subject matter and reconstruct the process of teaching and learning from the standpoint of ‘Saramdaum Education’ which can be logically traced to the Zhu Xi's ge-wu-zhi-zhi theory.
