업사이클링 디자인 특성에 따른 작품사례 분석

초록
오늘날 지구생명계는 예측할 수 없는 자연재해들을 일으키며 인류의 생존을 위협하고 있다. 이는 인간과 자연이 수평적인 네트워크 시스템으로 가동될 때에만 지구생명계가 다시 회복될 수 있음을 의미한다. 이와 같은 관점에서 국제에너지기구(IEA)를 필두로 하는 친환경정책은 이제 모든 국가가 간과할 수 없는 매우 중대한 이슈라 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 그린트렌드 가운데 디자인 분야 또한 낡거나 폐기처분의 위기에 놓인 물품에 독창적인 디자인을 더해 원래의 제품보다 더욱 가치있는 명품으로 창조하는 업사이클링 디자인이 대세이다. 유럽과 미국 등지에서 시작되어 친환경 소비패턴을 이끌고 있는 업사이클링 디자인 분야는 우리나라에서도 선두기업들이 등장하며 새로운 소비문화를 주창해 나가고 있다. 본 연구에서는 오늘날 세계적인 트렌드로 급부상하고 있는 업사이클링 디자인의 특성들을 고찰하였다. 업사이클링 디자인의 특성은 첫째, 오리지널 오브제와 그 역사성을 핵심요소로 하는 스토리텔링. 둘째, 예술성과 희소성에 의한 매뉴얼 아트. 셋째, 형태전환, 기능전환, 의미전환, 장르전환에 의한 트렌스포머. 넷째, 가용성과 지속가능성을 강화하는 물질의 순환 등으로 요약된다. 이에 연구자의 수 년 간의 업사이클링 작업과 교육결과물들을 작품사례로 하여 업사이클링 디자인 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과 연구자의 작업뿐 만 아니라 대부분의 업사이클링 디자인은 역사성을 지니며 제품의 형태 및 속성이 전환됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 예술성과 희소성이 매우 높으며, 가용성과 지속가능성이 매우 증가된다는 사실도 알 수 있었다. 그러므로 폐기물 제로(zero)를 목표로 하는 업사이클링 디자인이야 말로 지속가능한 사회를 가능케 하는 창조적인 대안이 될 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
Today’s earth life system brought about unpredictable natural catastrophes and endangers the survival of human beings. It means that the eco system can be restored only when the human beings and the nature operate their network system at the horizontal level. In this regard, eco friendly policy spearheaded by IEA (International Energy Agency) becomes important issue no country can overlook. Upcycling design, out of green trends is major trend which is creating finer masterpieces from old worn out stuffs with infusion of creative design. In Korea, some companies with this concept followed by European and North American companies promote this new consumer trend. In this study, the researcher investigates today’s global trend of Upcycling design pattern and their elements. The Upcycling design is made up of storytelling based on original object and its historicity, manual art on artistry and scarcity, transformer with the switchover of form, function, meaning and genre, and material circulation, intensifying solubility and sustainability. The cases are analyzed on the researcher’s artwork and teaching results over the years. In due course, the researcher noticed that most of Upcycling design has its historicity through functional and genre transformation. Through the process, artistry, scarcity, solubility and sustainability are increased. Therefore, it is expected that the Upcycling design, targeting zero untreated waste, is the creative alternative that enables the coexistence between the nature and the human beings into sustainable community.
