월지국･목지국의 우리말 이름과위치에 관한 연구: 굴절･반사된 역사적 명칭의 우리말 복원을 위한 음소분석조합법 시론

본 연구는 ‘음소분석조합법’을 활용하여 ‘월지국’과 ‘목지국’의 우리말 명칭을 복원하고 그 위치를 추정하는데 목적을 두었다. 음소분석 대상이 중국 사서의 기록인 경우에는 B. Karlgren의 중국 고대발음을 기준으로 했고 한국의 사서일 경우는 「동국정운」과 「훈몽자회」를 기준으로 했다. 연구결과 ‘월지국’의 우리말 명칭은 ‘윗 나라’로서 지배적인 국가의 위상을 나타낸 이름이다. 또 목지국’은 ‘못 나라’로 복원되는데, 이는 농경사회의 생산시설인 못을 보유･관리하는 국가를 의미한다. 따라서 ‘월지국’은 맹주국가의 위상을 표현한 것이고 ‘목지국’은 지역의 특성을 반영한 실제의 국가명칭인 것이다. 이것은 ‘월지국’이 ‘목지국’을 잘못 기록한 것이라는 기존의 다수설과 다르며, 동일한 마한의 지배 국가를 ‘윗 나라’ 또는 ‘못 나라’로 같이 불렀던 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 한편 ‘마한’의 우리말 뜻이 ‘남한’이라고 할 때, 마한의 도읍은 익산 이남의 지역이 되어야 한다. 그리고 벽골지’의 우리말 명칭은 ‘벼 고을 못’이 되는데, 이는 ‘못 나라’의 의미와 상통하는 것이다. 따라서 삼한시대에 주요 쌀 생산지로서 ‘벼 고을’이었던 김제지역이 목지국이었거나, 김제지역의 풍요로움을 함께 향유할 수 있었던 인근지역이 목지국의 영역이었다고 추정된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the original Korean names of Walljiguk & Mokjiguk which had been refracted and reflected with Chinese characters by essaying to use the phonetic analysis compounding methode and to find out the areas in which they had been located. I use the ancient pronunciation of the Chinese characters which were reconstructed by K. Karlgren if the Korean historical names were recorded in the Chines books. When they were recorded in Korean books, then I use the books of Donggukjeongun and Hunmongjahoi. The results of this study are as follows: the reconstructed original Korean name of Walljiguk is ‘Wit-nara’ which meant the dominating superior country; the original Korean name of Mokjiguk is ‘Mot-nara’ which meant the owner and manager country of large lake which had been constructed to cultivate rice or for other agricultural purposes. These implies that Walljiguk and Mokjiguk are possibly the same country. And it would be against the existing theory that the Walljiguk is a clerical error of the Mokjiguk. Finally, we could find out the location of the Mokjiguk by using the Korean name of the ‘Mahan’ ― the ‘South Han’. The Mokjiguk which was the capital of Mahan had to be located to the south of the Iksan which was the capital of Han. Further reconstruction of Korean name of ‘Byeokgol’ led us to recognize that it was the ‘Byeo goeul’ which meant the famous town where produced a great deal of rice. As so we could estimate that Mokjiguk had been located in Gimje of which ancient name was ‘Byeokgol’ or in a region where the richness of Gimje could be shared.
