전공공부와 영어공부의 노동시장 성과 – 대졸 여성 청년을 중심으로 -
The Labor Market Performance of Major Study and Learning English : in the Case of Women Youth College and University Graduates

본고는 한국교육고용패널(Korean Education & Employment Panel ; KEEP) 자료를 이용하여 대학시절의 전공공부와 영어공부가 어떠한 노동시장 성과를 가져오는가를 숙련 성격의 관점에서 분석하였다. 노동시장 성과가 다수 관측되는 여성 대졸 청년에 한정하여 취업, 괜찮은 일자리 취업, 그리고 임금을 지표로 분석하였다. 분석 결과 전공공부와 영어공부는 취업에 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하고 있다. 영어공부는 괜찮은 일자리 취업에 유의한 정의 영향을 미치고 있다. 영어공부는 임금에 유의한 정의 영향을 미치고 있으며, 전공공부는 4년제 대졸자의 경우만 임금에 유의하게 정의 영향을 미치고 있다. 전공-직무 일치는 임금에 유의하게 정의 영향을 미치고 있다. 분석 결과로부터 기술변화가 빠른 시기에 괜찮은 일자리를 제공하는 기업들은 청년들의 일반 숙련을 보다 중시하고 있다는 시사점을 얻을 수 있다. 2년제 대졸자의 경우 전공공부 및 영어공부가 노동시장 성과에 미치는 영향이 거의 없다는 점이 발견되어 그 이유에 대한 후속 연구가 필요하다.
Abstract
This article analyzes what is the effect of major study and learning English during school on the labor market performance in terms of skill characteristics, using KEEP(Korean Education and Employment Panel) data. The indicators of labor market performance are employment status, employment in the decent job, and wages. The target of analysis is only female youth graduates because the most male youth have not graduated yet. Learning English is measured by the time consumed for English study and going abroad for English language training. Both major study and learning English appear not to have any significant effect on their employment. But learning English has a significant effect on the employment in the decent job. Learning English has a significant effect on the wages. Major study has a significant effect on the wages just only for university graduates. The results imply that Korean firms prefer general skill to special skill. For 2 year college graduates, major study and learning English do not have any significant effect on the labor market performance. Further study is required to analyze which factors may influence the labor market outcomes of 2 year college graduates.
