다국적기업 본국의 제도적 환경이 기업 경쟁력과 기업의 사회적 책임에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

본 연구는 다국적 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR) 활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향을 제도이론 관점에서 분석하는데 연구 목적이 있다. CSR이 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 기존의 연구에서는 산업조직론 혹은 전략적 행동 관점에서 실증분석을 행하여 온 반면, 본 연구는 글로벌 환경 하에서 CSR과 성과에 대한 분석에 제도주의적 관점을 적용하는 극소수 연구의 하나로서 CSR 연구 분야에 기여를 하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 다국적 기업의 CSR 활동을 CSR에 대한 전략적 의도, 참여, 운영성과 세 가지 하부요인으로 측정하고 이들 변수가 경영성과에 미치는 영향을 각각 알아본 후, 이러한 CSR 활동과 경영성과와의 관계에 다국적 기업 본국의 제도적 압력이 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 글로벌 500대 기업 중 100대 기업에 대하여 조사한 결과 다국적 기업의 CSR 활동 중 참여와 운영성과는 기업의 경영성과와 정(+)의 관계를 보였고, 이러한 CSR 활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향력은 다국적 기업 본국의 제도적 압력이 높아질수록 커지는 정(+)의 조절효과가 존재하는 것으로 실증분석 되었다. 추가적으로 본국의 제도적 압력을 정책적 압력, 사업적 압력, 사회적 압력으로 구분하여 조절효과를 분석하였는데 세 가지 압력 모두 정(+)의 조절효과를 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이와 같은 결과는 CSR 활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향력이 제도적 압력이 높을 때 보다 강하게 나타나게 된다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 다국적 기업의 CSR 활동을 촉진하기 위해서는 본국의 제도적 환경이 중요하며, 적절하고 체계적인 제도마련이 필요하다는 함의를 제공하고 있다.
Abstract
This study purports to empirically test the relationship between MNCs’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) and firm performance and then examine moderating effects of institutional pressures of home country on this relationship. This study makes a contribution to the CSR field in that it is one of the very few studies that have adopted the institutional perspective in explaining the relationship of CSR and performance. The CSR activity in this study is assumed to comprise strategic intent, engagement and operational performance. The results have shown that there is a positive CSR and firm performance relationship. Two sub-variables of CSR, engagement and operational performance, were found to affect firm performance positively. From the institutional perspective, three different institutional pressures of MNCs’ home country - policy drivers, business actions and social enablers – were used as moderating variables of the CSR and performance relationship. This relationship was positively moderated by the three institutional pressures of home country in such a way that when institutional pressures of home country are high, the CSR and firm performance relationship strengthens further. This study lends itself well to filling the void in existing empirical research of CSR by taking into consideration the impact of institutional pressures on the CSR and performance relationship.
