남성의 양육 참여와 평등한 부모 역할의 의미구성: 육아휴직제도 이용 경험을 중심으로

본 연구는 오늘날 우리 사회에서 부각되고 있는 ‘돌보는 아버지’의 의미를 성 평등의관점에서 분석하고자 하였다. 남성의 자녀 양육 참여는 핵가족화 경향 및 여성의 경제활동 참여 증가와 같은 가족을 둘러싼 다양한 변화와 맞물린 시대적 요청의 결과인 동시에,친밀성에 대한 남성들의 요구가 가족 관계에서의 평등주의적 태도와 결합하면서 나타난변화이다. 이에 자녀 양육에 적극적으로 참여하는 남성들의 부성 실천 과정에서 드러나는 부모 역할에서의 평등 의미를 분석하고자, 육아휴직제도 사용 경험이 있거나 현재 휴직 중인 30-40대 아버지들을 심층면접 하였다. 육아휴직제도를 사용한 남성들은 좋은 생계부양자이면서 좋은 양육자가 되는 것이 불가능하다는 사실을 체득하게 되며, 돌봄의 주체로 인식되는 것은 일종의 낙인이 될 수있다는 점을 우려한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이들은 ‘좋은 아버지’, ‘좋은 남편’이 되기 위한노력의 조건으로서 ‘돌봄’을 ‘선택’한다. 자녀를 돌보는 데 적극적인 남성이라 하더라도그들이 인식하는 만큼 배우자와의 양육 분담이 균등하게 분배되지는 않게 되는 가운데,오늘날의 젊은 아버지들은 ‘합리적’ 선택에 대한 믿음을 바탕으로 성 평등한 부성을 실천하고 있다고 여기게 된다. 합리적 양육 분담에 대한 믿음은 자녀 양육 과정에서 발생하는 갈등적 상황을 일시적으로 무마하는 데 유용하지만, 평등한 양육 참여와 책임에 관한 남성들의 소극적 이해는 가족 관계에서의 불평등을 은폐할 가능성을 높인다. 따라서 부모 역할을 수행하는 가운데 드러나는 불균등한 균열의 지점에 주목하고, 돌봄을 둘러싼 지속적인 갈등과 협상 과정이야말로 평등한 가족 관계를 담보하는 요건임을 인식할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the meaning of “caring fathers” thatcomes to the fore in Korean society, focusing on men’s parental leave. Men’s care involvement is not only the responses to various changes infamily life, such as the nuclearized family structure and the increase ofwomen’s economic participation, but also the results from combiningmen’s desire for intimacy with the egalitarian attitude in familyrelationships. To analyze the meaning of equal parenting revealed fromthe practices of fathers who care for their child(ren) actively, in-depthinterviews are made targeting for men of 30-40s who have used theparental leave or are using it. During the parental leave, men come to realize it is impossible to bea good breadwinner and good carer at the same time, and they worrythat it can be a kind of stigma to be regarded as a primary carer. However, men choose the care to prove their efforts to be a good father and a good husband. Even though men try to involve the careeagerly, actual distribution of caring responsibility is skewed towardwomen, and yet young fathers think they practice gender equality infatherhood based on the belief in “rational” choice. The belief in rationally shared care-involvement is useful to cover upthe conflicts occurring in process of caring temporarily, but men’snarrow understanding of equal involvement and responsibility forchildcare raises the possibility for concealing the inequality in familyrelationships. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the inequable cracksof parenting and regard the continuous conflicts and negotiations as therequirements for stable and equal family relationships.
