환위험이 신용등급에 미치는 영향

초록
본 연구는 기업 환위험의 노출정도와 환위험 관리가 신용평가에 반영되고 있는지를 검증한다. 구체적으로 선행연구(정석우 외 2012)에 근거한 환위험 측정치를 사용하여 기업의 환위험을 경제적 환위험과 회계적 환위험으로 구분하고, 각각의 환위험이 신용평가 결과와 연관되어 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 2000년부터 2010년까지 신용평가사로부터 신용등급을 부여받은 3,475개 기업-연도 표본을 대상으로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 신용평가기관은 외화자산 및 부채의 비중이 크거나 해외수출비중이 커서 경제적 환위험 노출이 큰 기업일수록 낮은 신용등급을 부여하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 환위험에 따른 영업현금흐름 및 회계적 이익의 변동성이 그 기업의 미래 상환능력에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 기대되기 때문이다. 둘째, 사후적으로 환위험을 효과적으로 관리하는 기업의 경우, 즉 회계적 환위험이 작을수록 높은 신용등급을 부여받는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 환율변동 위험에 노출된 정도가 큰 기업일수록 수익 및 재무구조의 안정성이 감소하므로 낮은 신용등급을 부여받으나 기업이 헤지를 통해 효과적으로 환위험을 관리할수록 환율변동에 따른 자산부채 및 이익의 변동성이 감소하여 높은 신용등급을 부여받는다는 것을 의미한다. 또한, 단기신용등급을 나타내는 기업어음에 대한 신용평가등급을 사용하여 동일한 분석을 수행한 경우에도 일관된 결과를 보여주었다.
Abstract
This paper examines whether firms' foreign currency risk exposure and the effectiveness of foreign currency risk management are associated with credit rating. Using 3,475 firm-year observations from 2000 to 2010, we find that firms receive less favorable credit ratings as firms' economic foreign currency risk, which is measured as 1) the ratio of foreign assets and liabilities and 2) export ratio, increases. In addition, if firms' management of accounting exposure to foreign currency risk has been effective, firms are more likely to receive higher credit ratings. The results suggest that increased volatility of operating cash flow and earnings from foreign currency risk exposure affects negatively firms' future ability to repayment, which results in less favorable credit ratings. However, firms' effective foreign currency risk management from hedge decreases the volatility of firms' future value, resulting in more favorable credit ratings. The results hold when we use credit ratings for commercial paper (CP) which represent relatively short-term credit ratings.
