국내 제약회사의 의약품생산과 기업이익에 대한 탐색적 연구
An Exploratory Study on the Firm’s drug production behavior and the Financial Profits in South Korea

제약회사는 원료의약품, 완제의약품 이외에도 비타민, 건강기능식품 등 다양한 제품을 생산판매한다. 본 연구에서는 규제산업으로 이해되는 제약산업에서 활동하는 기업을 대상으로 기업행동(conduct)과 단기적 재무성과 간의 연관성에 대하여 탐색하였다. 제약회사의 완제의약품 생산과 기업 이익 간의 연관성에 초점을 두어 실증분석을 수행하였다. 2003년-2009년을 대상으로 격년으로 111개 기업에 대한 완제의약품생산액, 전문의약품 생산비중, 생산기업의 매출액영업이익률, 매출액순이익률, 총자산순이익률 그리고 기업특성을 조사하여 불균형 패널데이터를 구성하고, 확률효과모형으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 완제의약품생산액과 전문의약품 생산비중은 대체로 기업의 영업이익에 통계적으로 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 세부 분석에서, 전문의약품 생산비중은 매출액 300억 이상의 기업들만을 대상으로 분석한 결과에서 음(-)의 추정계수 값을 보였으나 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 한편, 판촉활동은 영업이익률과 순이익률에 추정계수가 모두 음의 값을 나타낸 반면, 연구개발활동은 매출액순이익률 및 총자산순이익률에 유의한 정(+)의 연관성을 보였다. 한편, 2007년 및 2009년 연도더미변수는 모두 음의 값을 보였으며, 특히 영업이익률과 총자산순이익률에서 통계적으로유의하게 드러나 기업 이익이 시간경과에 따라 감소하는 추세임을 확인하였다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 연구한계점 및 향후 연구방향을 제시하였다.
Abstract
Pharmaceutical companies produce pharmaceuticals, raw materials, vitamins, health functional foods for market. Among diversified products, the reimbursement price of therapeutical medicines are regulated under the National health insurance system in South Korea. I tested the relationship between drug production and performance. To analyze the relationship between the portion of drug products and corporate profits, panel data on 111 pharmaceutical companies were collected for the period of 2003-2009 from official drug production performance reports and official public statement of company performance released by the Korean Investment and Securities every other year. Based on a unbalanced panel data consisting of 392 observations, the multivariate panel models showed the results that the ratio of ethical drugs production were a significant factor on the ratio of operational profit to net sales(p<0.01). And R&D activities was found to be a positive factor on the ratio of net profit to net sales and return on assets(p<0.01). On the other hand, advertisement and promotion activities seemed to be a negative factor on the ratio of net profit to net sales, but statistically not significant. In addition, the pharmaceutical firm’s profits were shown to tend to be decreasing over time. Based on these findings, the implications and the limitations of the study were presented and the subjects for future research were suggested.
