한국 상장기업의 생애주기와 자본구조
Firm's Life Cycle and Capital Structure: Evidence from Korea

초록
본 연구는 기업의 생애주기와 자본구조에 관한 분석을 수행하였다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 한국 상장기업의 1,089개 기업을 대상으로 2003년에서 2012년까지 10개년 동안의 패널자료를 이용하여 실증분석을 하였다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전체기업을 대상으로 살펴본 결과, 생애주기와 시장가부채비율 간에는 정(+)의 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 연령 제곱과 시장가부채비율 간의 관계는 부(-)의 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나, 생애주기와 자본구조 간에는 비선형 역U자형 관계를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 생애주기를 단계별로 분리하여 살펴본 결과, 생애주기와 시장가부채비율 간에는 성장기업, 성숙기업, 쇠퇴기업에서 각각 부(-), 정(+), 부(-)의 영향을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 유가증권 상장기업과 코스닥 상장기업을 분리하여 살펴본 결과, 생애주기와 시장가부채비율 간에는 유가증권 상장기업의 경우 유의한 부(-)의 영향을 보인 반면, 코스닥 상장기업의 경우 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 보여 생애주기와 자본구조 간에는 시장에 따른 차이가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This paper examines how firm's life cycle affects capital structure of Korean manufacturing firms from 2003 to 2012. Our results are as follows ; First, we find that Korean firms have significantly positive relationship between age and market leverage. Also, using the square root of the age variable, we find that Korean firms have significantly negative relationship between age and market leverage. This results show that relationship between life cycle and capital structure have inverted U-shaped patterns, which is consistent with prediction of pecking order theory. Secondly, we find different results for firms classified as growth, maturity and decline. Specially, we find that growth, maturity and decline firms have significant negative, positive and negative relationship between age and market leverage. This results show that maturity firms were more dependent on external finance(debt), while growth and decline firms were less dependent on debt, which is consistent with prediction of trade off theory. Thirdly, we examine relationship between age and leverage by divided firms in KOSDAQ and KOSPI market. We find that KOSPI firms have significantly negative relationship between age and market leverage, while KOSDAQ firms have significantly positive relationship between age and market leverage. This results show that relationship between life cycle and capital structure arise from difference of market.
