Nursing Students’ Learning Experience in Communications Course

Nursing students often appeal that they have difficulties in communications in the clinics settings. This fact suggests that the current communications course be reappraised. In this papper, to carry out the reappraisal of the current communications course in the nursing program, data were gathered with Focus Group discussion of the qualitative research method, and the gathered data were analyzed with the data analysis method of Colaizzi(1978). The total participants were 8 students, who were divided in to two groups, one is composed of juniors and the other, seniors. The total interview time was 4 hours. The students stated about 66 topics, which can be classified into 11 subjects, and then 5 categories: “not interesting course,”“discrepancy between the theory and the practice,”“difficulty in communications,”“demand for a innovative teaching,”and “desire for fluent communication skills.” Finally, Those five categories depicted above show that the nursing students strongly desire fluent communications in clinical settings, and this fact should be considered when the communications course for nursing students is designed and the curriculum is evaluated.
