크라우드 펀딩은 소규모 문화예술의 자립 기반이될 수 있는가?: 인디 뮤지션들의 펀딩 경험에 대한 분석을 중심으로

이 연구는 최근 소규모 문화예술 생산의 새로운 재정적 대안으로 주목받고 있는크라우드 펀딩에 대한 논의를 진행하였다. 크라우드 펀딩의 현황에 대한 비판적 분석을 위해, 소규모 문화예술 생산의 주체이면서 크라우드 펀딩 프로젝트에 대거 참여하고 있는 직업군인 인디 뮤지션들을 심층 인터뷰하였다. 대중음악 산업에서 주변화되고 있는 인디씬 내에서도 ‘마이크로인디’에 해당하는 인디 뮤지션들은 크라우드펀딩과 불가분한 관계를 맺고 있다. 연구결과, 인디 뮤지션들이 경험한 크라우드 펀딩은 선행 논의들에서 제시되는 낙관적이고 희망적인 모습과는 상당 부분 다른 모습을 보이고 있었다. 첫째, 인디 뮤지션의 경제적인 상황은 그들이 크라우드 펀딩에주목할 수밖에 없도록 하고 있었으며 반대로 크라우드 펀딩 업체도 인디 뮤지션들을 영업 대상으로 인식하고 있었다. 둘째, 인디 뮤지션들은 크라우드 펀딩 진행 과정에서 홍보와 보상을 적극적으로 실천하는 방식으로 기업가화되기를 요구받고 있었다. 셋째, 문화의 다양성 확보나 소규모 문화예술에의 자립 가능성도 인디 뮤지션들의 경우에는 제한적이었다. 인디 뮤지션들의 크라우드 펀딩 성공 여부를 결정짓는것은 그것을 가능하게 만드는 기술적 환경이 아니라 지인들의 도움과 팬덤의 존재여부로 나타났다. 이 같은 연구결과는, 크라우드 펀딩에 대한 기술 중심적인 낙관론대신, 크라우드 펀딩의 잠재력을 실현시킬 수 있는 사회적/기술적/제도적 조건들을검토할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This paper deals with ‘crowd funding’ that has came to the fore as newfinancial solution of small-scale culture & arts production. In order to make acritical analysis, we carried out in-depth interview with indie musicians as anoccupational category, for many of them are participated in crowd fundingproject. As a result of analysis, we found that micro-Indie musicians who areindivisible from crowd funding have experienced some negative aspects of crowdfunding which optimistic prior discussions does not mention. First, there was asymbiotic relationship between indie musicians and crowd funding companybecause of the economic conditions of indie musicians. Second, indie musiciansbecame cultural entrepreneurs who perform promotions and reward executionsby themselves. Third, the effect of promoting cultural diversity and thepossibility of independence are also restricted for indie musicians. Success orfailure for funding projects depended on the size of aid from acquaintances andfandom, not technological environment of crowd funding. This results ofresearch suggest that instead of optimistic technocentrism, social, technological,institutional preconditions should be examined thoroughly in order to realizecrowd funding’s full potential.
