우리는 기념품을 비망록 곧 우리의 기억을 일깨워주고 우리의 마음속에 저장되어 있는 과거 경험의 회상을 도와주는 것으로 생각하곤 한다. 보통 우리는 기억을 그 기념품을 소유하고 있는 이의 마음속에 위치시킨다. 그러나 만약 사람들이 기억을 그 기념품 자체 안에 저장해 두었다면 어떻게 될까? 기념품을 소유한 사람과 그의 회상 사이의 이러한 관계는 처음에 어떻게 해서 생겨난 것일까? 1990년대 후반 베트남의 도시들에 있어 동유럽 혹은 남베트남으로부터 도입된 기술은 때로 그 자체가 가족들에 의해 기념품들로 탈바꿈되어, 그러한 기술을 집으로 가져온 이들에 대한 기억을 담고 있는 것이 되곤 했다. 이 논문은 두 개의 목적을 포함한다. 논문은 개혁 이전의 옛 기술들이 가족의 기념품들로 변형되는 과정을 탐구한다. 논문은 그 기술들을, 사진에 관한 롤랑 바르트의 모델을 따라, 왕년의(that has been) 삶에 대한 흔적들로 간주함으로써 이러한 탐구를 수행한다. 따라서, 버나드 스티글러(Bernard Stiegler)의 기억술(mnemotechnics)의 철학에서 힌트를 얻은, 기술의 기념품으로의 변형은 개혁 이전 시기의 시간에 대한 국가화가 가져온 가족의 사회성과 지역 공동체에 대한 폭력적 결과에 대응하려는 노력으로서 간주된다.
Abstract
We are accustomed to thinking of keepsakes as aide-memoires, as objects that jog our memory, help us recall past experiences stored in the back of our minds. We locate the memories inside the mind of the keepsake owner. But what if people located memories inside the keepsakes themselves? How could such a relation between keepsake owner and his souvenir be imagined? In urban Vietnam in the late 1990s, technologies brought home from Eastern Europe or Southern Vietnam were sometimes turned into keepsakes by families, said to have memories about those who had brought them home. This paper comprises two objectives. It seeks to explore the transformation of old technologies from the pre-reform era into family keepsakes by considering them in analogy to Roland Barthes' model of photography, as traces of a life that has been. Subsequently, taking a cuefrom Bernard Stiegler's philosophy of mnemotechnics, the transformation of technologies into keepsakes is considered an effort to counteract the consequences of an etatization of time in the pre-reform era, which constituted a violence against the sociability of families and local communities.
