수익비용 대응정도와 신용평가의 관계 연구

본 논문은 수익비용의 대응정도와 신용평가 사이의 관계에 대해 연구하였다. 선행 연구들은 수익비용의 대응정도가 높을수록 이익의 변동성은 낮고 이익의 지속성은 높음을 보여주었다. 이 경우 수익비용 대응정도가 높은 기업은 상대적으로 위험이 낮은 것으로 평가되어 높은 신용평가 등급을 받을 것으로 기대된다. 또한, 상대적으로 미래 수익성에 대한 예측이 용이하여 신용평가기관간의 이질적 신용평가정도는 낮을 것으로 예상된다. 본 연구는 이상의 가설을 검증하기 위해 1998년부터 2009년까지 분석에 필요한 자료들을 얻을 수 있는 거래소 상장 2,110기업－연도의 표본을 대상으로 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 수익비용의 대응정도가 높은 경우 신용평가등급이 더 높음을 발견하였다. 또한 수익비용 대응의 정도가 높을수록 신용평가의 이질성은 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 본 논문의 연구결과는 다음과 같은 두 가지 측면에서 의미가 있을 것으로 기대된다. 첫째, 수익비용의 대응 문제를 전문적 정보이용자인 신용평가기관의 평가와 연결시켜 분석함으로써 관련 연구의 영역을 확장시켰다. 둘째, 최근 재무상태표 중심의 회계원칙 제정 경향과 관련하여 회계정책 제정자 및 기업에게 수익비용 대응원칙이 가지는 가치를 환기시킴으로써 관련 실무에 시사점을 제공하였다.
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between the matching principle and the credit rating. It is documented that the matching of revenues and expenses increases the earings smoothing and persistency. In this case it is expected that bond rating would be improved. And, the dispersion of credit ratings would be decreased. But, if the credit rating institutions have an independent information and rate a corporate's credit, then the matching principle would not make any differences. So, it is supposed to be an empirical question. The samples are obtained from FN guide. They consist of 2,138(for H2 1,797)firm－years, listed on Korean Stock Exchange from 1998 to 2009. This study finds that the samples with higher degree of matching principle have statistically the higher credit ratings, and the lower split bond ratings. The result in this study has two implications as follows. First, this paper contributes to expansion of the literature on the matching principle as the different expectation of the credit rating institutions. Second, this paper arouses the informational value of the matching principle about the adoption of balance sheet based accounting.
