Ratification by the union is the process by which members vote to accept or reject thetentative agreement that management and the union have negotiated. Due to its profoundeffect on labor relations, it has been a topic of importance among scholars and practitioners. This study examined the effect of communication channels dependency on the relationshipbetween tentative agreement expectations (i.e., to the extent that union members'expectations regarding the tentative agreement have been met) and union members'acceptance. The survey method was applied using a sample of 296 employees at automobilecompanies in Korea. The findings were as follows. First, both financial and non-financialagreement expectations were positively related to union members’ acceptance of the tentativeagreement. Second, communication channels dependency moderated the relationship betweennon-financial agreement expectations and union members’ acceptance. To be specific, theeffect of non-financial agreement expectations on contextual acceptance was stronger forunion members with high union channel dependency than for those with low union channelsdependency. Moreover, among union members who perceived high levels of non-financialagreement expectations, the levels of beneficial acceptance were always high regardless ofmanagement channels dependency. On the other hand, among union members who perceivedlow levels of non-financial agreement expectations, the levels of beneficial acceptance werehigher among union members who were more dependent on management channels thanthose who were less dependent on management channels. This finding disproved the claimthat union members do not consider management's information reliable, and thus reinforcesthat management should consider emphasizing the role of communication in order to achieveratification for collective bargaining agreements.
