Today China is playing a leading role in reshufflingthe world order based on its economic success. Itssuccess with economic revival has exerted a lot ofinfluences on Chinese designs. It is needed to understandthe process of Chinese designs being modernized till thepresent day in order to fully understand them. This study described and analyzed the historicalprogression of modern Chinese designs based onempirical historical data in the literature on history anddesign in early modern and modern history of Chinain order to investigate the developmental process ofmodern Chinese designs. The study divided the developmental process ofmodern Chinese designs according to the needs forinternal changes within the field of design instead ofgeneral historical division method and analyzed thecharacteristic elements of each period. As for methodology, the investigator collectedliterature on the history of Chinese designs publishedin China and abroad and examined it according to thecharacteristics of each period with a focus on thecontent written in early modern and modern days andthe political and social backgrounds influencing thedesign developmental process from the perspective ofobjective and descriptive approach. The findings show that the developmental processof modern Chinese designs has historically moved alongthe path of continuous development in the dialecticalbalance of autonomy and control. The political andsocial perspectives according to the developmentalprocess of Chinese designs have been applied to Chinesedesigns as they are, which indicates that one cannotunderstand modern Chinese designs without taking thepolitical and social perspectives into account. The study tried to provide a basic framework forthe research and understanding of Chinese designs ata time when they are rapidly emerging on the globalstage.
