중고령 남성 임금노동자의 자영업 이행과 근로소득의 변화

Although it is widely known that self-employment sector has experienceda restructuring under the prolonged domestic economic slump since themid-2000s, transition from wage employment into self-employment hascontinued to occur in Korea. This paper examines and compares the changesin earned income occurred by the transitions for older male salariedemployees aged of 50 or over into self-employment and other wage andsalaried employment position. By applying the panel fixed effect model to thedata from the 4th wave to the 13th wave of the Korean Labor and IncomePanel Study(KLIPS), this study finds that the transition for older malesalaried employees into other wage and salaried employment positions hassignificantly negative effect on earned income after one year later. However,it is not found that the transition into self-employment for old male salariedemployees is associated with a decrease in earned income after one year later. This result implies that the continuing transition for older salaried employeesinto self-employment are mainly due to the low-quality of older workers’labor market in Korea. This result also tells us that improving the conditionof older workers’ labor market is a precondition to restrain the influx of oldersalaried employees into self-employment sector in Korea.
