초록
본 연구는 16세기 프로테스탄트 종교개혁의 중심지였던 제네바에서 약혼과결혼, 이혼과 재혼이 실제로 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 당시의 『결혼법령』(1546)과『교회법령』(1561)을 통해 밝히려는 시도이다. 다시 말해 종교, 특별히 프로테스탄트가 주도적 역할을 했던 16세기 제네바에서 종교와 가족의 구성, 해체, 재구성의관련성을 조명하려는 것이다. 지금까지 국내의 종교개혁 연구가 주로 교리와 신학 논쟁에 치중되어 왔다면, 본 연구는 그동안 상대적으로 소홀하게 다루어졌던 평범한 사람들의 생활, 특별히 성과 결혼과 가족생활에 대해 관심을 기울일 것이다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은내용을 다루고 있다. 첫째로 제네바의 법령이 약혼, 결혼, 이혼을 어떻게 규정하고 있으며, 실제로 결혼과 이혼이 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 검토할 것이다. 둘째로제네바 컨시스토리와 소의회가 성, 결혼, 가족의 문제를 어떻게 처리했는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해서 칼뱅의 제네바 법령들이 중세 로마가톨릭교회의 전통과 어떤 점에서 구별되는지, 어떤 점에서 진보를 보였는지, 또한 어떤 한계와 약점을 가지고 있었는지 밝혀질 것이다. 본 연구를 통해 심각한 가족의 위기와 해체를 경험하고 있는 한국사회에 창의적으로 적용할 수 있는 유용한 지침을 발견할수 있게 되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This study is an attempt to disclose how engagement and marriage, divorce and remarriage were actually arranged in 16th century Geneva. For this purpose I will deal with the 1546 Marriage Ordinances and 1561 Ecclesiastical Ordinances. In this study, I will examine the relationship between religion, and the formation and dissolution of marriage in the 16th century Protestant city. While domestic studies on the Reformation have been focused on the debates of doctrines till now, this study concentrates on certain aspects within the lives of ordinary people specifically sex, marriage, and family life, which have not received enough concern. This study deals with the following subjects. First, this study examines what the Genevan Ordinances say regarding engagement, marriage, and divorce. Secondly, this study looks into how Consistory and Small Council dealt with the cases related to sex, marriage, and family issues. This study is interested in the differences between the Genevan Ordinances and the canon laws of Middle Age, the contributions and strengths, and the limitations and weaknesses of the Ordinances. I hope that this study suggests the useful insights to solve the problems of family crises and dissolution in Korean society.
