본 연구는 경합에서 경기자들이 보조수단을 선택할 수 있는 경우에 (i) 어떤 경기자가 보조수단을 선택하는지, (ii) 지대낭비가 증가하는지에 대해 분석한다. (i)을 분석하기 위해 Epstein and Hefeker 모형을 적용한 하부게임완전균형(SPNE)을 유도한다. SPNE를 유도하기 위해 제1단계에서 노력수단을 선택하고, 제2단계에서 노력수준을 선택하는 2단계 게임을 고려한다. 후방귀납을 적용한 SPNE로부터 다음의 결과를 얻는다. 첫째, 상금의 가치가 낮은 경우에 각 경기자는 하나의 노력수단을 전략변수로 사용한다. 둘째, 상금의 가치가 큰 경우, 상금에 높은 가치를 부여한 경기자는 보조수단을 선택하지만, 낮은 가치를 부여한 경기자는 선택하지 않는다. 셋째, 상금의 가치가 그리 크지 않은 경우에 순수 내쉬균형은 존재하지 않을 수 있다. (ii)를 분석하기 위해 기존 Tullock 모형에서 유도된 지대낭비와 Epstein and Hefeker 모형에서 유도된 지대낭비를 비교하며, 상금의 크기가 일정수준 이상이면 보조수단의 사용을 통해 지대낭비가 감소될 수 있음을 보인다.
Abstract
We study a rent-seeking contest in which each player can use a second instrument to increase his probability of winning the contest. We examine (i) who selects the second instrument from players, (ii) whether the use of the second incurs RD. To answer (i), we consider a two-stage game: at the first stage, two players have to decide on the use of the second instrument; and at the second stage, the players expend their own effort to win a prize. Solving for SPNE of the game, we find three results. Firstly, in the low size of the stake, players do not select the second instrument. Secondly, SPNE may not exist if the stakes of players are not sufficiently high. Thirdly, in the high size of the stake, the player with the higher stake uses the second instrument and the rival with the relatively lower stake does not. To answer (ii), we compare RD obtained by Epstein and Hefeker's model with that obtained by Tullock's. Then, we show that the use of the second instrument may decrease RD if the stakes of players are sufficiently large.
