중견기업의 수출과 특허활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구: 수출과 특허활동의 상호작용 및 최고경영자 특성의 조절효과

본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 중견기업의 수출과 특허활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향과 수출과특허활동의 상호작용이 경영성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 동시에 최고경영자의 특성이 수출과특허활동의 상호작용효과를 조절하는 지를 분석하는 것이다. 우리나라 산업구조에서 허리 역할을하는 중견기업은 상대적으로 수출비중이 높아 해외진출을 전략적으로 추진하고 있으며 이에 따라해외진출을 위한 제품경쟁력 제고 차원의 특허활동이 요구되고 있다. 또한 수출활동은 특허활동에영향을 미치며 특허활동은 수출활동에 영향을 미치게 되는 측면에서 중견기업의 수출과 특허활동의상호작용효과와 아울러 최고경영자의 해외경험 및 이공계 전공 경험이 수출과 특허활동의 상호작용과경영성과 간 관계를 조절하는 지를 탐색하고자 한다. 본 연구는 2011년부터 2013년까지 3년간지속적으로 수출을 추진하고 특허활동을 추진한 421개 기업을 실증 분석한 결과, 수출활동은 경영성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치지 않으나 특허활동은 경영성과에 음(-)의 영향을 미치며 수출과특허활동의 상호작용은 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 최고경영자의 해외경험은상호작용과 경영성과 간의 관계를 강화하는 것으로 나타났으나 최고경영자의 이공계경험은 조절효과가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 실증분석에 따라 중견기업으로서는 기업의 경영성과제고를위하여 수출과 특허 활동의 적극적인 병행수행이 필요하며 최고경영자의 이공계 경험이 조절효과를나타낼 수 있도록 투자활동효과를 높이는 전략이 필요하다고 할 것이다.
Abstract
Mid-sized enterprises (MSEs) play an important role in the middle of very few large enterprisesbelonging to business groups and the absolute number of small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs). MSEs with high growth potential have capabilities to create high-quality jobs, and mitigate polarizationbetween large companies and SMEs by growing into global companies and overcoming the limitationsof scale with SMEs. This study is to analyze the effect of the interaction between export and patent activities onfirm performance in MSEs, and the moderating effect of CEO characteristics of the relationshipbetween interaction and firm performance. MSEs are concentrating their efforts to internationaldiversification strategically because the ratio of MSEs’ export volume is comparatively high. MSEsare also increasing patent activities for international competitive power. Considering that exportand patent activities affect each other, and CEO’s foreign experience and technological backgroundinfluence management decisions in overseas entry or R&D, we investigated the effect of interactionand moderating effect of CEO’s characteristics. We find that export activities was not related tofirm performance, and patent activities had negative effect on firm performance, but the interactionbetween export and patent activities was positively related to firm performance. Other findings ofthis study are CEO’s international experience strengthened the positive relationship between interactionand firm performance, but CEO’s technological background was not related to moderating effecton relationship. This study suggests that MSEs need to expand export and patent activities in parallel,and enhance patent efficiency for utilizing CEO’s technological experience effectively.
