이 연구의 목적은 기존의 애국심에 관한 연구들이 민족주의를 집단 이기주의나 파시즘과 같은 본질적으로 부정적인 것으로 간주하고 민족주의를 애국심으로부터 분리시켜 애국심의 대상을 민족이 아니라 객관적인 개념의 조국이나 같은 영토 내에 사는 모든 사람들의 총체로 규정하도록 만듦으로써 진정한 애국심이 갖는 공동체적 연대감이나 자기희생의 이타적 행위의 도덕적 타당성을 설명하지 못하는 오류를 범하고 있으므로 진정한 애국심의 이타적 행위가 자기 자신과 자신과 친밀한 관계에 있는 가족이나 친지와 같은 사람들에 대한 배려와 병행적으로 공존할 수 있음을 슬롯의 덕 윤리적 관점을 중심으로 설명하고자 하는 것이다. 슬롯은 자신 또는 자신과 특별한 관계에 있는 사람들에 대한 배려와 관심이 전혀 관계없는 타인들에 대한 배려와 관심과 균형을 이룬 상태로 개인 내에 존재하고 있음을 예를 통해 설명하고 이러한 균형이 확대되어 자신의 민족과 다른 민족 사이에도 존재 할 수 있음을 보이고 있는데 이를 통해 애국심이 기본적으로 자기 자신과 자신의 민족에 대한 사랑과 애착으로부터 형성되며 이러한 민족주의적 애국심이 다른 민족에 대한 배려와 사랑과 균형을 이룬 상태로 개인 내에 존재 할 수 있음을 보인다.
Abstract
Existing research on patriotism assume that nationalism is an inherently negative philosophy, akin to fascism and mass egotism, and seek to separate nationalism from patriotism, instead directing patriotism toward an objective home state or a community of all who live in that state. This leads to an error in which the feelings of communal solidarity and the altruistic self-sacrificial tendencies that true patriotism gives rise to are not sufficiently explained as morally justified. This research aims to explain that the altruism of true patriotism can co-exist with consideration toward one's friends and family through Slote's perspective on ethics. Slote explains through examples that consideration for one's friends can exist in balance with consideration for unrelated strangers, and shows that such balance can exist also between one's own ethnic group and another, unrelated ethnic group. Slote goes on to show that patriotism is primarily formed from the love of oneself and of one's own people, and that such nationalistic patriotism can exist in balance with consideration and love for another people.
