환경‧사회책임‧가버넌스 통합지수(ESG)가 재무성과에 미치는 영향

연구목적 – 본 연구의 목적은 환경경영, 사회책임경영, 및 지배구조가 기업의 재무성과에 미치는 영향과 환경경영, 사회책임경영, 및 지배구조의 통합지수인 ESG가 재무성과에 미치는 영향을분석하는 것이다. 연구방법 - 2010년부터 2013년까지의 ESG 지수를 이용하여 실증 분석하였다. ESG는 한국기업지배구조원에서 매년 공시하는 ESG 통합지수와 개별지수로 측정하였다. 재무성과는KIS-VALUE를 이용하여 수집하였다. 최초표본 3,577개(기업-연도) 중 12월 결산법인이 아닌 기업과 금융보험업, 재무자료를 구할 수 없는 기업, ESG지수가 없는 기업과 중소기업을 제외한2,207개(기업-연도) 표본을 대상으로 분석하였다. 주요 결과 - ESG통합 지수와 환경경영(E), 사회책임경영(S), 및 지배구조(G) 지수가 우수한 기업은 그렇지 않은 기업보다 ROA와 ROE가 높은 것을 확인하였다. 또한 배재무적 정보를 전략적으로 관리해야 함을 확인하였다. 시사점 - 환경경영이나 사회책임경영 그리고 기업지배구조가 기업성과에 중요한 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 기업들은 환경문제나 사회책임문제 해결에 있어서 피동적 자세에서 벗어나 적극적으로 이러한 문제해결에 앞장서고 지배구조 개선에 대처하는 전략을 수립하여야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Purpose - Purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of environmental management, corporate social responsibilities, and corporate governance as well as the integrated ESG index on corporate performance. Design/Methodology - Research samples were selected from KIS-VALUE during 2010 and 2013. The ESG integrated index was developed by the Korea Corporate Governance Institute. The initial samples were 3,577(firm-year). The final samples were 2207(firm-year) after excluding non-December closing firms, financial firms, etc. Findings - We found that the firms good at environmental activities, social responsibilities and corporate governance are good at ROA and ROE. The firms good at environmental activities, social responsibilities and corporate governance are also good at the integrated ESG index. Implications - The firms should actively engage in the social‧environmental activities as well as governance reform activities. Encouraging these activities would entail sustainable development of the firms.
