대일본제국헌법발포식니시키에(大日本帝國憲法發布式錦絵)의 쇼켄황태후(昭憲皇太后) 표상

본고는 메이지20년대인 1889년에 발포된 대일본제국헌법발포식 니시키에 속에서 쇼켄황태후가 어떤 이미지로 표상되는지를 회화와 니시키에를 통해 살펴보았다. 대일본헌법발포식에서 양장예복을 입고 일본최초의 화려한 왕관과 휘장, 훈장을 패용한 쇼켄황태후의 새로운 이미지는 이토의 궁중개혁에 따른 여성복제의 양장화의 최고절정이었다. 이 모습은 전통적 니시키에 화법에서는 기존의 양장과 동일하게 재생산될 뿐이었지만 실제를 그린 고세다의 회화를 바탕으로 한 이노우에의 니시키에에서는 쇼켄황태후의 복식이 갖는 시대성과 권력을 새롭게 찾아내어 상징화했다. 또한 “근대일본에서 황후”가 있어야 할 정치적 공간과 그 표상이 양장예복이라는 복식의 힘으로 대리 표상되며 이는 근대국가의 퍼스트레이디의 시작점으로도 연결되는 기회를 제공했다. 따라서 일반 독자들은 전통적 니시키에를 통해서는 에도적이고 전통적인 일본을 향유했다. 그렇지만 이노우에 작품을 통해서는 천황의 대리인이자 자신의 위상과 역할을 정치적으로 대상화시켜 새로운 퍼스트레이디라는 내러티브의 주인공으로 등장한 쇼켄황태후의 변화된 메타포를 갖게 되었다.
Abstract
This paper presents an examination as to how Empress Shōken is symbolized in a Nishiki-e depicting the ceremony for the promulgation of the Constitution of Great Japan (Dai Nippon kenpô happoshiki no zu) in 1889 in the Meiji 20s through painting and Nishiki-e. A new image of Empress Shōken wearing Western style ceremonial dress with a splendid tiara, badges, and medals reaches the peak of Westernization in terms of women’s clothing by Itō Hirobumi’s reform of the court. While the image is reproduced to reflect pre-existing Western clothing in the traditional Nishiki-e, Empress Shōken’s clothing embodying the power and characteristics of the ear is represented in the Nishiki-e by Inoue Tankei, based on Goseda Horyu’s painting drawing reality. Moreover, the political space in which the “Empress of the Modern Japan” should be and its symbolism are represented vicariously through the power of clothing, especially the Western style ceremonial dress, which provides an opportunity to connect to the starting point of the First Lady in the Modern country. Accordingly, general readers are able to find traditional and Edo-like Japan through the traditional Nishiki-e and Modern Japan, a constitutional monarchy, through Inoue’s Nishiki-e, who recognized Empress Shōken as the new main character of the narrative, politically objectifying Shōken’s status and role as a deputy of the Emperor of Japan.
