J. M. Synge의 ‘바다로 간 기사들’ 공연을 위한 무대의상 연구

The purpose of this study was to provide preliminary data for practitioner on making costume in related fields of the performing arts work to understand the process of the planning and making the costume. Research methods were combined theoretical research and empirical research. Research scope was limited to the planning and design of the costumes produced. There were excluded the makeup and hair styles. Performing arts selected for the study was Synge's 'Riders to the Sea'. The play was performed at the Black Box in Bugakkwan of Seokyeong University from March. 13 ～ March 15, 2014, it was the direct observation enabled by researchers to participate in stage as stage costume designer. The results were as follows. First, the designs were planned and made as the analysis of art director's intention to direct a performance based on a scenarios, author's portfolio, screenplay identify the nature and subject matter of the analysis on role and relationship between the main characters of the planning and design of the costumes. Second, Costume was produced to consider the period costume in the historical background of the costume(in the late 18th century～early 19th century) to represent the background (Inishmaan of Ireland) as spatial background. The following is information considered when creating costumes. By using the loose X-shaped silhouette with a space not to expose, the lives of ordinary person to move physically were expressed. The items of clothing for women were various as blouses, skirts, jumpers, skirts, vests, however we can rule out distraction by the costumes of unified impression in one-act plays. Apparel items for men were limited to shirts and pants and vests. People of a figure were represented by a line such as internal line of clothing on neckline, type of jumper skirt, the length of the apron, the folds of the skirt. For the color, the unity was maintained on the whole using a low tone in the saturation and brightness. The contents of the entire mood was gloomy, which expressed using the heavy and dark color, and the atmosphere of fear of the future and grief that losing a family break was expressed with greyish tone in low saturation close to the achromatic tones and light greyish and dull tones. For the fabric, to consider the characteristics period when it was hard to were in variety but similar or the same, it was selected with coarse muscle and crash material as main fabric. Third, it showed a costume in the actual performance on the stage by using the costumes made in the course.
