글로벌 경쟁이 격화되고 시장환경이 급변하면서 기업들은 공급기업과의 협업을 통해 경쟁우위를 강화하고 있다. 특히 한국의 제조기업처럼 재료비의 비중이 높은 기업들은 공급기업의 역량이 제조기업의 성과를 결정한다고 해도 과언은 아니다. 이런 기업들은 공급기업 역량 강화를 위해서 다양한 공급자 개발 활동을 수행하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 한국의 대기업이 활발하게 시행하고 있는 지식기반 공급자 개발활동이 공급기업의 운영성과에미치는 효과를 실증하는 것이다.구체적으로 지식기반이론, 사회적교환이론, 거래비용이론을 기반으로 하여, 대기업의 지식기반 공급자개발 활동은 공급기업의 전략적 자원(지식, 관계적 사회자본, 특유자산)의 축적을 유도하여 공급기업의 운영성과에 긍정적인 영향을미친다는 가설을 제시하였다. 본 연구의 가설을 검증하기 위해서 한국의 대표적인 대기업56개의 전략적 협력업체를 모집단으로 하여 자료수집을 시도하였다. 총 164개 기업으로부터 데이터를 수집하였으며, 가설 검증은 구조방정식 분석방법을 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 지식기반 공급자 개발활동은 공급기업의 지식습득, 관계적 사회자본, 특유자산 투자에 긍정적인 영향을 미치며 공급기업의 운영성과를 향상시키는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
More firms have relied upon their strategic suppliers for their competitive advantage due to intensified global competition and ever-changing market environment. This is particularly true for Korean large enterprises of which their purchase accounts for over 75% of total manufacturing costs. Many buying firms have employed supplier development activities to nuture their suppliers’ operational capabilities. This study aims to examine the effects of the knowledge-based supplier development on supplier operational performance. Specifically, basing upon the knowledge based view, the social exchange theory, and transaction cost economics, we posit that a buyer’s knowledgebased supplier development activities lead to the accumulation of its suppliers’ knowledge stock, relational social capital, and buyer-specfic assets. Consequently, the supplier’s increased knowledge, relational capital, and specific assets will result in the supplier’s operational performance improvement. We have collected data from 164 suppliers that are strategic partner firms of the 56 leading Korean large enterprsies. Structural equation modeling methodology is employed to test the proposed hypotheses. This study found that a buying firm’s knowledge-based supplier development efforts facilitated supplier’s knowledge acquisition, enhanced supplier’s relational capital, and led to larger investment in buyer-specific assets, and, in turn, significantly improve the supplier’s operational performance.
