Background Given the recent changes in the domestic marine leisure tourism industry, an increase in the need for various ‘staying tourism’ types of dynamic activities is expected. These activities go beyond simple tourism to include experiencing, relaxing and sightseeing. A national desire exists to improve access to marine leisure tourist attractions through the early completion of transportation SOC, including an expressway and high-speed train; to provide government support for marine leisure tourism industry policies; and to improve the quality of leisure culture because incomes have increased. Methods This research proposes design concepts for two types of hairtail fishing boats. It applies a digital design process with a focus on providing convenience, functionality and safety from the users’ perspective after recognizing the need not to develop the whole marine leisure industry but rather to focus investments in specific areas (e.g. leisure activities of experience and relaxation), and pursue relevant industrial strategies by identifying changes in consumer preference indicated by changes in lifestyle. Result One way to salvage existing retired fishing ships formerly used in the special marine tourism festivals in the western and southern seas of Jeollanamdo Province, the “Mokpo Hairtail Fishing Festival” and the recently depressed “Mokpo Hairtail Fishing Festival”, 『Concept Design for the Ships for Fishing for Marine Tourism and Leisure Activities』 is considered a potentially suitable means to revive marine leisure tourism and a reason for replacing decrepit ships. Conclusion In addition, the suggested concept design for hairtail fishing boats is expected to be utilized for various marine leisure tourist businesses in inshore and coastal waters, as well as in the western and southern seas.
