An Exploratory Study on the Franchise Industry by Comparison between Franchisee and Non-franchisee

The rapid growth of franchise sector in the economy has been accompanied with the increase of small business owners since the baby boomers reached the retirement age. Baby boomers were born between 1955 and 1963 and on average 300,000 to 400,000 baby boomers retire every year till year 2018. Because of the dramatic increase in average life expectancy, retiring baby boomers expect to keep working even after they retire. They are likely to start a business rather than search for a job after they retire. This study is to explore the characteristics of franchise industry, evaluate its competitiveness, and provide prep entrepreneurs with various information on franchise industry using different techniques such as t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Annual Wholesale and Retail Trade Survey on 182,000 businesses was conducted by Korea National Statistical Office and used as data for this study. The results show that there are differences in sales and operating income between franchisee and non-franchisee and among types of businesses.
