영문재무제표분석 교육을 위한 사례적용 연구

초록
본 연구에서는 교과서 중심의 강의법이 아닌 실제 기업의 사업보고서를 활용하여 학생들의 능동적인 수업참여를 유도하고 문제해결, 커뮤니케이션, 팀웍능력을 키움과 동시에 기업의 재무제표를 보다 포괄적으로 이해하고 활용할 수 있는 능력을 배양시킬 수 있는 사례학습을 영문재무제표 분석 교과목에 적용하여 소개하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 세계적인 커피체인점으로 일반인에게도 잘 알려진 스타벅스를 선정하여 학습자들의 관심을 유발하고 다양한 시각에서 접근하여 해석된 재무제표 분석이 이뤄진 사례연구 결과를 제시하였다. 스타벅스의 주된 사업내용과 사업영역, 그리고 스타벅스가 속한 산업의 업계현황 및 경쟁사들에 대한 배경지식을 습득한 후 주요 재무성과를 분석하고 부문별 재무성과를 분석하여 분석 대상 기업에 대한 이해를 높여 나갈 수 있도록 강의 차수별로 관련 주제를 포함한 학습 진도를 제시하였다. 미국증권거래위원회 웹사이트 내 10-K 형식에 맞춰 작성된 2014년 9월 말 시점의 연간보고서를 활용하여 경영진단의견서와 재무제표 및 주석사항을 바탕으로 스타벅스의 현 재무상태를 파악하고 나아가 재무 의사결정에 도움을 줄 수 있는 다양한 재무분석 방법을 소개하고 실제 스타벅스에 적용시키는 과정을 소개한다. 본 사례연구는 전형적인 논문 구조를 탈피하고 실제 수업에서 적용하였던 사례를 보다 구체적으로 소개하고 타 기업의 연간보고서를 활용하는 사례 적용이 가능하도록 하여 사례기반 학습의 회계교육이 활성화 되는데 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
This case study introduce a way of applying real business cases in the field of accounting education which is more broadly adopting textbook based education. Even though case-based learning is known for the better way to educate the learners, well-developed case studies are rare in the accounting education. The purpose of this study is to develop a case on the financial statement analysis for education. Financial statement analysis provide insight into the company’s current financial status and lead to the development of policies and strategies for the future. This case study utilize the Starbucks’ 2014 annual report to analyze the company’s financial statements and draw basic conclusions about its financial health. This study present important concepts and techniques, as well as more comprehensive way of interpreting the annual report of Starbucks to analyze the firm. Lecturers may use other company’s annual report to apply this case studies on their financial statement analysis education.
