부유하는 노동자 : 시흥시 정왕동 1인 가구 노동자들의 노동과 생활세계

본 연구는 경기 남부에 소재한 시화공단과 그 배후 주거지역인 시흥시 정왕동을 대상으로, 그곳에 거주하고 있는 1인가구 청년 노동자들의 노동과 생활경험을 규명하는것을 목적으로 한다. 공단 인근 노동자 생활세계에 대한 많은 연구들은 노동자들의 열악한 노동 및 주거환경과 이를 일시적인 것으로 감내하면서 장기적으로는 힘들고 낯선 상황을 벗어나고자 하는 노동자들의 열망을 기록하고 있다. 그와 같은 노동자들의열망은 공단의 일자리를 버리고 다른 대안을 찾아 지역을 벗어나거나(exit), 혹은 자신이 속한 작업장이나 커뮤니티에 헌신하는 가운데 지역사회가 발전하면서 지역 내 정주성을 확보하고 정착하는 경향(voice and loyalty)으로 나타난다. 정왕동의 1인가구청년 노동자들 또한 과도기적(transitive) 인식, 즉 보다 나은 미래를 위해 어려움을 감내하면서 일시적으로 이 지역에 거주할 생각을 갖고 이곳으로 유입되고 있다. 그러나낯설고 열악한 상황을 벗어나고자 하는 이들의 열망은 (경제적 성과를 달성하거나 혹은 다른 대안을 찾아) 이 지역을 벗어나는 ‘탈출’로 이어지지 않으며, 그렇다고 결혼등을 통해 가족을 구성하고 지역 내 커뮤니티를 형성하면서 안정적으로 정착하게 되는 ‘정주’와도 거리가 있다. 오히려 자신이 속한 지역에 대한 정주의식이 매우 낮은가운데, 노동과 주거의 불안정성을 적극적으로 변화시키려 하기보다는 주어진 상황을체념적으로 받아들이면서 ‘부유’하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 1인가구 남성 청년 노동자들을 대상으로 실시한 심층면접조사를 통해 이러한 노동자들의 불안정한 생활이 구체적으로 어떻게 드러나고 있는지를 분석한다. 정왕동 1인가구 노동자 사례는 노동의불안정성이 작업장을 넘어 노동자들의 의식과 일상생활을 어떻게 불안정하게 만드는지를 잘 보여주고 있다.
Abstract
This study attempts to examine the work and life experiences of the workers living alone in Jeongwang-dong, Siheung City. Many studies of workers living nearby industrial complex world, record the aspirations of workers who want to escape harsh working and living environment which they are faced to. Those aspirations of workers is presented that they leave that region to find alternatives while abandoning their jobs (exit), or they settle in that region dedicating their company or communities (voice and loyalty). The young workers living alone in Jeongwang-dong also seems to have the transitive recognition, that has an idea to temporarily living in the area enduring the challenges for a better future. However their desire to escape the strange and harsh situation does not lead to ‘escape’ the area (achieving economic performance, or find other alternatives), nor to form the communities and settle with stability in this region. Rather, With very low consciousness of settlement, they accept the instability in the labor and housing complaisantly and are ‘floating’ rather trying to change the exist conditions. In this study, we analyze the unstable lives of these workers through in-depth interviews conducted by the male youth workers living alone. This will show the way that instabilities of labor could make the consciousness and daily life unstable.
