As a member of the Glasgow School, Mackintosh pursued ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ concept in architecture, interior design and textile design. He achieved unity and harmony between his buildings, furnitures, interiors and textile designs through his unique design view. This study focuses on textile designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the pioneers of modernism, and to examine how the background of architecture influenced his designs, and to inquire into his design view through his approach to textile design. The research contents and methods are as follows: the research on his major architectures which are the Glasgow School of Art and the Hill House was done on the basis of the reference materials along with the direct experience I had of these sites. And the study on the Art Nouveau style of the Glasgow School was carried out based on the reference materials. Lastly, his textile designs were analyzed and classified. Mackintosh created imaginative textile designs in which the motifs seem moving and alive. He approached textile design in the same attitude in creating the interior space of his organic architecture. His design stemmed from nature, and his design style is based on the restrained Art Nouveau style of the Glasgow School. He expressed the inventive imagination through the stylized design and the abstract design. His designs show balanced effect through contrasts between a straight and a curved line, between a line and a shape, and between colors. The use of the contrasting design elements with the restrained oval and the simplified asymmetrical shapes is characteristic of Mackintosh’s design. The minimal and understated use of design elements became a part of his basic design principle. Mackintosh’s design view through textile design is summed up in the idealistic creative imagination. He expressed his high ideals of making human life richer through inventive textile design. His textile designs still look fresh to this day, and they contain the modern artistic sense.
