Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the charitable giving of Andrew Carnegie(1835- 1919) because Carnegie and his view of ‘The Gospel of Wealth’ still have an impact in today’s world. The disparity between poverty and wealth still plagues us. Growing inequality is the overriding social reality in today’s world. The 50 wealthiest entrepreneurs in the world control a staggering portion of the world economy. Despite this growing inequality, only a small number of rich people give their fortune for the benefit of the community. Andrew Carnegie was different, even though he is often ranked as one of the 10 richest people of all time. During his lifetime, he gave away over 350 million dollars. He was perhaps the first to state that the rich have a moral obligation to give away their fortune. In 1889, he wrote ‘The Gospel of Wealth’, in which he asserted that the highest life must be attained by living for the good of our fellows. Carnegie started his career as homo economicus which assumes a rational, self-interested human who acts to maximize his own utility. But Carnegie began to turn out to be homo sociologicus by giving away his fortune to build more than 2,500 public libraries. The significance of his act of philanthropy has been noticed, yet the reason of his transformation to be homo sociologicus is rarely noticed. For this, ‘The Forms of Capital’(1986) by Pierre Bourdieu is used to argue that Andrew Carnegie gave away his economic capital in the form of the gospel of wealth, but he was also rewarded in the forms of cultural, social, and symbolic capital. The act of giving helped Carnegie to be a messenger of the gospel of wealth(2Co 5:15). Once one starts to give, an entrepreneur’s influence becomes evident in the realms of culture, society, and business.
