A Study on Instructional Model of Convergence Design based on Design Thinking

(background and Purpose)Innovation based on interdisciplinary convergence has also been emphasized for corporate management and education amid emergence of convergence paradigm that stresses co-existence of various values and integrated thinking. This means that as design expands its role as a strategic tool drawing out innovation through multi-disciplinary integration, design thinking is a concept widely accepted as a method to achieve innovation in business and education. Thus, this study was intended to improve awareness towards value and necessity for design thinking through investigation into and analysis on cases of design thinking-based successful design process and to lay theoretical and practical groundwork by developing convergence design class model that could provide specific grounds and guidance at educational sites. (Method)Through theoretical investigation into domestic and overseas studies, this study has learned the change of design education and importance of design thinking. This study also researched and analyzed the data of design process based on design thinking by searching for domestic and overseas DB on the Internet, documents and various previous studies, so that it would prepare a base to present a direction to develop the instructional model of convergence design education. (Results)The instructional model of convergence design based on design thinking composed by observing the situation around and empathy to discover problems empathize stage, it recognized the problem and set a goal to solve the problem define stage, possess the feasibility and viability strategize stage, solve the problem freely and divergent ideate stage, to refine the implementation of ideas through prototype stage consists of a rating evaluate stage to improve the idea through feedback . During the process, divergent thinking and convergent thinking has made repeatedly in this process, the window is emergent thinking and integrated thinking plays an important role. In addition, exchanges and convergence of various disciplines such as the humanities , social sciences , management, marketing , engineering , natural sciences should be based on the premise throughout the process of design thinking. (Conclusions)This study is meaningful in that it presents a direction to develop a curriculum that is suitable for domestic education environment through the study on advanced cases of design process based on design thinking. Convergence should be based on imagination and creativity while design thinking should be achieved with integration of logical thinking power and intuitive thinking power. The design thinking-based convergence design class model will serve as basis for fostering convergence talents who are innovative and future-oriented based on human-centric view of value, and furthermore, equipped with the ability to execute.
