클라우드 서비스 시장이 확대되는 상황에서, 이를 성장동력으로 삼고자 하는 기업들의 움직임이 점점 가시화되고 있다. 사례연구 대상기업인 A사 신성장동력으로 클라우드 사업을 육성하되 자사의 역량을 최대한 활용하고 전략적 방향성에 대한 불확실성을 해소하고 차별화된 전략을 도출하고자 본 연구를 진행하게 되었다. 클라우드 서비스 시장은 잠재적인 성장 가능성이 큰 만큼 리스크 또한 크기 때문에, 통신사업자인 A사에 적합한 최적의 전략 방향 선정을 연구의 주목적으로 삼았다. 이를 위한 연구 방법론으로는 전략 방향 대안 도출 프레임 웍인 Strategic Position Map을 사용하였으며, 이를 평가하기 위해 4단계의 평가 프레임 웍을 적용하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해‘점진적 사업 포트폴리오 확대 (IaaS → SaaS)’를 최적 전략을 선정하였으며, 이는 IaaS 기반의 신규 클라우드 사업에 집중하고 중장기적으로는 SaaS로 사업 영역을 확장하여, 향후 주요 트랜드가 될 사물 인터넷 활성화 시기에 대비하는 점진적인 포트폴리오 확장 전략이다. 즉 전혀 새로운 영역이 아닌 기존 사업과의 연관성과 시너지를 고려하여 점진적으로 사업을 확장해 나가는 것이 해당기업에 가장 바람직한 전략방향이라는 결론을 도출하였다.
Abstract
As cloud service market enlarges, ICT companies are eager to move into the market regarding it as a new growth engine. This study has been conducted to develop and select an appropriate cloud business strategy of company A (Telco) which wants to grow cloud business as a new growth engine. While cloud service market has a great potential for growth, it also has many risks. As such, much emphasis has been put on selecting best strategic direction. We adopted "Strategic Position Map" as a framework for selecting strategic alternatives, and then used four steps of evaluation process for final selection of appropriate strategy. We selected "gradual expansion of business portfolio (from IaaS to SaaS)" as the best strategy for company A. That means company A should focus on the cloud business based on IaaS for the time being, gradually expand into the SaaS based business such as IOT(internet of things) in the mid and longer term. It is desirable that company A should not expand into entirely new business areas, but into related business areas where it could maximize the synergy between an exsiting business and a new one.
