Identifying opportunities for technology-based services through business method patent analysis

One of the most important activities for developing new technology-based services is opportunity identification. Previous studies have mainly been customer-centered, lacking data and quantitative methodology. This study suggests a database-centered approach for identifying opportunities for technology-based services by using business method (BM) patent analysis. Association rule mining (ARM) is employed to co-classification information for constructing interrelationship matrices of technology-based services. The analytic network process (ANP) is applied to the constructed interrelationship matrices in order to produce the priorities of technology-based services. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) window analysis is employed to the derived priority values for calculating importance and the rate of importance of technology-based services. A portfolio map is constructed with these two values for identifying and managing opportunities. A case study of mobile services is conducted to provided the operation of the proposed approach. It is expected that suggested approach could help technology planners of service firms to reduce the uncertainty in the fuzzy front-end stage of new technology-based service development.
