본 연구에서는 국내 24개 생명보험사의 5년(2011~2015)간 패널(panel) 데이터를 활용하여 위험기준자본금(Risk Based Capital; RBC)비율이 해당 보험사의 성과에 어떻게 영향을 주는가를 실증적으로 분석한다. 생명보험사의 성과는 기존 문헌연구를 토대로 보험영업이익률(Underwriting Gain), 자산수익률(ROA) 및 자본수익률(ROE)로 측정한다. 회귀분석 방법은 본 연구에서 사용한 패널 데이터의 속성과 종속변수와 설명변수 사이의 내생성(endogeneity) 문제를 감안하여 2단계 일반화 적률법(two-step Generalized Method of Moments; GMM)과 반복적 GMM(ITGMM)을 사용한다. 실증분석 결과 국내 생명보험사의 RBC비율은 기업성과에 긍정적 영향을 주는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이는 보험사의 재무적 건전성 강화를 강조하는 정부의 감독정책 방향이 타당함을 시사한다. 본 연구의 결과는 Berger(1995) 등 은행산업에 대한 대부분 실증분석 결과와 일치한다. 그러나 미국 보험산업에서 RBC비율의 증가는 오히려 보험사의 부(wealth)에 부정적 영향을 준다는 Shelor, Wagster & Wol(2002) 등 일부 연구결과와는 상반된다생명보험, RBC비율, 수익성, 일반화 적률법.
Abstract
The paper analyzes the effect of risk based capital(RBC) ratio on life insurers’ performance by using a panel data consisting of 24 life insurers for 5 years from 2011 to 2015 in Korea. This study measures the performance in 3 different ways, following the previous research papers: underwriting gain, return on asset, and return on equity. The paper takes regression analysis by using a two step generalized method of moments(GMM) and an iterated GMM(ITGMM), considering the characteristics of panel data and some endogeneity problems in the regression model. The test results reveal that RBC ratio positively affects the performance of life insurers, which implies validity of supervisory policy direction of the government who induces insurers to enhance the RBC ratios for financial strength. The results of this study is in agreement with those of most previous studies on banking sector including Berger(2005). However, it is contrary to the results of some studies on insurance sector, e.g. Shelor, Wagster & Wol(2002) showed that the increase in RBC ratio negatively affected the wealth of the US insurers.
