Newton의 원뿔대와 I. M. Pei의 유리 피라미드

본 논문에서 우리는 최근 예술가 JR의 설치예술로 주목받은 페이(I. M. Pei)의 유리 피리미드를 두 가지 방향으로 고찰한다. 먼저 페이의 유리 피라미드를 이집트 기하학에 뿌리를 둔 햄비지(J. Hambidge)의 동적조화로 해석하고 그리고 뉴턴(I. Newton)의 원뿔대를 모델로 하여 일반화 한다. 이를 도형 입장에서 살펴보면 유클리드(Euclid) 사각형의 일반화이며 방정식 입장에서 보면 이차방정식 x2-x-1=0의 일반화 x2-px-1=0인 유리수)이다. 일반화된 피라미드의 입장에서 우세르카프(Userkaf)의 피라미드는 방정식 x2-(16/5)x-1=0 으로 결정된다. 이와 같은 주장은 ‘피라미드 옆면의 넓이는 높이의 제곱과 같다’라는 가설에 기반한 것으로 우리가 설정한 가설은 페트리(W. Petrie)와 비어드(C. Beard)의 기하학적 통찰을 참고하고 마우코우스키(G. Markowsky)의 주장을 보완한 것이며 헤로도토스(Herodotus)의 언급을 잘못 사용한 불턴(D. Burton)의 가설과는 아무런 상관이 없다. 끝으로 예술가 JR의 ’피라미드 잠시 감추기‘는 모더니즘 논쟁의 재 점화와 함께 이집트 문명을 통하여 유럽 문명을 바라보는 계기를 제공한다고 본다.
Abstract
In this paper, we consider the glass pyramid of I. M. Pei, which recently attracted attention as the installation art of street artist JR, in two directions. First, Pei's glass pyramid was interpreted as a dynamic symmetry of Hambidge rooted in Egyptian geometry, and generalized by the model of Newton's frustum. This is a generalization of Euclidean rectangle in the view of diagrams, and generalization x2-x-1=0(p>0) a rational number) of x2-px-1=0 in terms of equations. Userkaf’s pyramid is characterized by x2-(16/5)x-1=0 as a generalized pyramid. This assumption is based on the hypothesis that ‘the area of the side of the pyramid is equal to the square of the height’. The hypothesis we have set up is based on the geometric insights of Petrie and Beard and supplements Markowsky's claim, and has nothing to do with Burton’s hypothesis of misleading of Herodotus’s mention. Finally, the artist JR 'temporally disappear' seems to provide an opportunity to look at European civilization through the Egyptian civilization, together with the re-ignition of the modernist debate.
