Even though Martin McDonagh was born and brought up in London, he can be an Irish playwright because his parents immigrated from Galway in Ireland to London and the backgrounds of his most plays are located in Connemara and the Aran Islands where he often spent his summer holidays in his childhood. Therefore he was accustomed to Irish culture and custom. Even though McDonagh himself denied the fact that he was influenced by Irish dramatists. However, many critics point out that he is in the tradition of Irish realistic dramas. It is not difficult to find some similarities between Synge’s plays and McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan. McDonagh portrays the earthy world of the rural Ireland just as Synge dramatizes the lives of the Aran Islanders and uses the language which they speak. Also The Cripple of Inishmaan contains some Irish characteristics such as Irish humor, romantic temperament, story telling. and the use of Anglo-Irish. They are important Irish traditions and customs which are found in Synge’s Riders to the Sea and the Playboy of the Western World. In conclusion McDonagh is an important Irish playwright who inherited the tradition of the Irish Dramatic Movement.
