Abstract
The Catholic Jesuit priest Hugo Makibi Enomiya-Lassalle (1898-1990), who was sent to Japan as a missionary in the early 20th century, pursued a dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism through Zen meditation throughout his life. Lassalle was convinced that the Jesuits' spiritual training and the Zen meditation of Buddhism could go beyond the gap and walk the path of consilience. Thus he invented ‘Christian way of Zen meditation’ and spread it to Germany and Europe. He also attempted a dialogue of responsibility for social peace together with the spiritual dialogue between Christianity and Zen. His Christian way of Zen meditation has become a ‘participating spirituality’ or ‘responsible spirituality’ that transcends individual spirituality and is responsible for the well-being and peace of society. Lassalle pursued a dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism through Zen meditation, that is the thought of nothingness, not through the doctrine or concept of religion. The Zen meditation based on the thought of nothingness, could be accepted as a meditation method of Christianity. His Christian way of Zen meditation is still popular in Europe, including Germany and Switzerland. Lassalle’s dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism through the Zen meditation is also required in Korea’s multi-religious society. Especially, Lassalle’s Christian way of Zen meditation is needed in order to break down the wall of impassibility between Buddhism and Christianity (Protestantism), which is at the center of the conflict between religions, This study investigates Lassalle’s dialogue with Zen in three main directions. First, it examines Lassalle’s spiritual dialogue between Christianity and Zen. The method of how the Jesuit spiritual training and Zen can be met is studied through the book Zazen und die Exerzitien des heiligen Ignatius written by Lassalle. Second, the dialogue between Zen and Christianity is examined as a dialogue of responsibility of Lassalle. In particular, centering on Lassalle-Haus founded by the Jesuit priest Niklaus Branchen, the meaning of the dialogue of responsibility pursued by Lassalle and how it is being practiced today are examined. Finally, it is diagnosed whether the spiritual and responsible dialogues of Lassalle through Christian way of Zen meditation could be possible for Korea’s multi-religious society.
