Scandinavian design is arguably one of most prominent movements of Industrial design study. Since 1930 until now, for almost a century, Scandinavian design still maintains the special elements and distinctive characteristics which make it constantly at the center of discussion within the industry. Research and analyze the main design thinking of Scandinavian design. And what made this style of design, constituted in Nordic, created a sect of Industry design. The answer lies on the simplicity, minimalism and most importantly, the humanity aspect reflected in all fields of design, art and handicraft. From the beginning of 20th century to 21st century, romanticism and functionalism are among the major sociological influences in European modernity, which then has had a great impact in their design and art areas. This influencing process constituted an unique design thinking which takes into consideration the human elements. In other words, Scandinavian design is not a mere copy of functionalism or some simple design trends, it opened a brand new path with the concept of Humanistic-functionalism. It connects local art, culture and tradition with design and art trends. Therefore find a method to understand Scandinavian design is the main purpose of this study. The design factors and analysis method HSE(Humanity – Society – Environment) presented in the third part of this study is a basis for many literature researches and analysis of Scandinavian design history. It focus on furniture design as an instance analysis to explain the overall design factors and thinking. The mixture of humanity and functionalism is the foundation of Scandinavian design, and combining it with a free thinking environment makes the final products even more flexible and open. In addition, the consideration of the relationship between human and environment, which emphasizes on the balance of human’s life and environmental sustainability in design, is already in the mainstream focus of industrial design. For many years, Scandinavian design has constantly evolved, improved, and found new ways to bring a better, more utilized life for people through its designs. Nowadays Scandinavian furniture design reflected more diversified manifestations but still maintain the design spirit from the history of Scandinavian design. The feature of Scandinavian design based on environment and society moreover focus on human, unchanged characteristics of local art and culture, mixed with contemporary art trends, has helped it stay current and influential until today.
