Developing Architecture of a Supporting Information System for Domestic Personal Manufacturing Based on Internet Communities

This paper proposes architecture of a supporting information system for personal manufacturing. It is based on integrated product data management (PDM) and Internet communities, and limited to domestic manufacturers. Personal manufacturing or fabrication is related to intelligent software for product development, widespread social media for communications among dispersed participants and emerging production machines such as 3D printers for highly personalized production. To provide the architecture, this study begins with survey on domestic cases of supporting tools for personal manufacturing and associated collaborations among participants including outside experts. Using the case studies, this paper proposes a requirement model for supporting information systems and an information system architecture responding the requirement model. To show feasibility of the proposed concept, it implemented the architecture as a prototype of a supporting information system for personal manufacturing and apply it to design and manufacture of example products.
