해외 펀드투자에서 환율효과는 고려되는가?: 6개국 해외주식형 펀드를 통한 실증분석

포트폴리오 이론에 따르면 해외주식투자 시 환율변동은 투자 수익률과 리스크에 영향을 미친다. 반면 해외주식형펀드 시장에서는 국내 투자자들이 환율효과를 고려하지 않는다는 분석이 지배적이다. 이에 본 연구는 환율이 해외주식형펀드 수요에 미치는 영향을 실증분석하였다. 실증분석에서는 6개 주요 투자국별로 설정액 규모가 가장 큰 해외주식형펀드를 5개씩 선택하여 패널추정하였다. 환율변수로는 1) 환율변동성(일중 변동폭), 2) 총 리스크 대비 환율 리스크 비중, 3) 주식수익률과 원/해외통화간 환율수익률간 공분산 및 환헤지(hedged) 여부를 사용하였다. 주요 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 총 리스크 대비 환율 리스크 비중은 해외펀드 수요에 유의하게 음(-)의 영향을 주었으며 이는 포트폴리오 이론과 일치한다. 둘째, 환율변동성은 이론과 달리 국가별로 해외펀드 수요에 상이한 영향을 미쳤다. 마지막으로, 주식과 환율 수익률간 공분산과 환헤지여부가 해외펀드 수요에 미치는 영향은 국가별로 상이하였다. 특히 주식과 환율 간 공분산관계에 상관없이 투자자들이 환헤지(hedged)를 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 실증분석 결과는 해외 펀드투자자가 환율효과의 일부만을 고려하는 성향이 있으며, 이에 해외펀드의 불완전판매(mis-selling) 문제 등이 발생할 수 있음을 의미한다.
Abstract
Although portfolio theory explains that the FX exposure strategies can be more appropriate than the FX hedging strategies in terms of risk management, the hedging rate of international equity funds in Korea reaches approximately 80% out of total. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of FX rate on the demand for international equity funds. The analysis results are as follows. First, the proportion of FX risk out of the total risks gives negative effects on the demand for international equity funds, which is consistent with the theory. Second, the effect of FX volatility, which is measured by the log difference between the highest and lowest in a day, is not consistent with the theory. In particular, investors seem to prefer ‘hedged funds’, regardless of the correlation between stock returns and exchange rate returns. The empirical results show that fund investors do not fully consider the effect of exchange rate, and it might cause the mis-selling problems.
