글로벌 경쟁이 심화되고 있는 가운데 다국적 기업의 전략은 기업의 가치에 중요한 영향을 미 칠 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 다국적 기업이 환율 불확실성 하에서 자회사 배치 전략이 기업의 가 치에 미치는 영향에 대하여 알아보고자 다국적 기업 연구에서 많이 활용되고 있는 다국적 기업 과 자회사의 성과 데이터를 활용하여 실증연구를 진행하였다. 실증을 위해 환율 불확실성을 본 국 환율불확실성과 진출국가 환율불확실성으로 구분하고 각각의 영향하에 자회사 배치 분포 전 략에 따라 기업가치가 달라지는지를 확인해 보고자 Heckman two stage model을 활용하여 검증 하였다. 연구결과 자회사 배치 시 진출국가수를 의미하는 폭(breadth)은 넓게 진출 국가에서의 집 중도를 의미하는 깊이(depth)는 작게 하는 자회사 배치전략이 다국적 기업 본국의 환율불확실성 하에서는 기업 가치에 긍정적인 영향을 미치지만 진출국가의 환율불확실성 하에서는 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 다국적 기업의 자회사 배치가 기업 가치에 미치는 영향은 불확실성의 종류에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 확인하였다.
Abstract
Subsidiary strategies for multinational corporations(MNCs) can have a significant impact on the value of firm. In particular, foreign exchange rate uncertainty can greatly influence on MNCs firm value. This study aims to analyze the reasons why studies about the effect of MNCs subsidiary configuration on the firm value do not show consistent results and to find a solution to the problem. To do this I focus on exchange rate uncertainty which is the most important uncertainty that MNCs are facing and divide it into home country and foreign subsidiary countries, and examine the effect of MNCs subsidiary configuration on firm value for each case. Empirical study is performed by Heckman two stage model based on Japanese 146 multinational corporations from 2008 to 2009. The result shows that under home country foreign exchange rate uncertainty, high breadth and low depth subsidiary configuration is better for firm value contrary to that of foreign subsidiary countries. Thus, the effects of MNCs subsidiary configuration on firm value can differ by types of uncertainty.
