Development of Textile Pattern Design using Jeju Onggi Content

All the countries of the world have established revitalization of the cultural industry and development strategy of local content related to traditional culture as well as the establishment of their own cultural as their own cultural infrastructure as their core task of the 21st century to strengthen their national competitiveness. The study extracted the traditionality and uniqueness of Jeju-do's culture as cultural resources, established them as competitive local cultural content, and then, selected the patterns expressed in Jeju Onggi(pottery) as the basic materials of the traditional cultural archetypes to suggest varied utilization methods. It was believed that Jeju Onggi deserved to be reviewed as local cultural content because Jeju Onggi was produced with independent and diversified plastic and pattern structure using clay(volcanic ash oils) generated from regional characteristics resulting from the unique climate and national environment of Jeju-do. The surface of Jeju Onggi is composed of simple but natural lines, splendid shapes, and various patterns, and most patterns and modified nature. To determine this, the study established the Jeju Onggi content based on a conclusion that analogized the formative characteristics and meaning of Jeju Onggi. Second, it abstracted the stylized morif from the Jeju Onggi content so that it could be used in various expressive techniques. After it composed one repeat of the reality type, style type, and abstract type based on the content motif, it developed the textile patterns as one color matching by each repeat. Third, by practicing additional design mapping, it investigated whether the development of textile patterns can be used in cultural fashion products. Regarding the manufacturing tools of textile pattern making, the design was performed with repeat sequence form of a square and diamond pattern out of eight repeat sequence forms using Adobe CS5(Photoshop & Illustrator) and TexPro of the Textile CAD program.
