스포츠문화에 대한 불만 : 이종격투기의 사회적 확산에 대한 한 가지 설명

이 연구의 목적은 고도로 문명화된 현대 사회에서 매우 폭력적이고 야만적인 이종격투기가 사회적으로 확산되고 있는 이유를 설명하는 것이다. 문명화과정은 본능적 욕구의 억압과정이며, 인류는 억압된 본능을 적법하게 해소할 수 있는 기제를 개발해왔다. 억압된 본능, 특히 공격 본능의 해소기제로서 발달한 스포츠는 본능의 요구와 문명화의 요구를 동시에 충족시켜주어야만 하는 과제를 부여받았다. 즉, 스포츠에서 관건은 두 요구 간에 균형을 유지하는 일이다. 그러나 현대 스포츠는 발달과정에서 점점 더 이 균형을 상실해가는 경향을 보이고 있다. 스포츠에서 본능의 요구보다 문명의 요구가 더욱 중요시되는 경향이 나타나게 된 것이다. 특히 경쟁 대상과 경쟁 내용의 확대와 규칙의 과도 적용, 그리고 건강과 비만해소의 강조를 통해 스포츠는 욕구의 해소보다 억제에 더 적합한 기제가 된 것처럼 보인다. 이러한 상황에서 이종격투기는 이러한 변화로 인해 생겨난 역할의 공백을 메워줄 수 있는 행위기제로 이해된다. 이종격투기에서는 거추장스러운 윤리규범이 큰 역할을 하지 못한다. 이종격투기에서는 공격욕의 억제가 아니라 발산이 관건이기 때문이다. 현대 사회에서 이종격투기가 누리고 있는 인기는 기존 스포츠문화에 대한 불만을 역으로 추론할 수 있게 해준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explain why the highly violent and brutal combat sport known as mixed martial arts (MMA) is spreading socially in highly civilized modern societies. The process of civilization is one of suppression of instinctive desires, and mankind has developed a mechanism that can relieve oppressed instincts. A sport developed as a means of resolving of an oppressed instinct, especially an aggressive instinct, must meet simultaneously the demands of instinct and the demands of civilization. In sports, the key is to balance the two demands. Yet, modern sport is becoming more and more out of balance. This is because sports tend to emphasize the need for civilization rather than instinctive demands. Sports seem to have become a more appropriate mechanism for despotism suppression than despair relief. MMA is an action mechanism that can bridge the gap between the roles created by these changes. The popularity of MMA in contemporary society thus makes it possible to infer the dissatisfaction with existing sports culture.
