본 연구는 한국 주식시장에서 주식형 펀드의 군집 현상을 네트워크 방법론의 관점에서 고찰하였다. 금융시장에서 펀드 매니저의 역할에 대한 다수의 연구는 계량경제학 모형 방법에 국한해 분석한 것과 달리, 복잡계 네트워크 방법론을 활용한 기관 투자자들의 군집 현상을 새로운 시각에서 살펴보았다. 본 연구에서는 펀드의 순자산가치(net asset value)를 이용하여 국내 주식형 펀드들 간의 유사성을 측정하고 이를 통해 최소 신장 트리(minimum spanning tree, MST) 네트워크를 생성하였다. 본 연구는 네트워크 관점에서 국내 주식형 펀드의 네트워크의 연결개수가 어떤 분포를 보이는지 확인하고, 특히 경제 상황에 따라 운용사의 군집 현상에 차별적인 영향을 미치는지 검토하였다. 분석 결과 펀드네트워크 구조는 연구 기간에 상관없이 모두 멱함수 분포를 따르고 있음을 관찰하였다. 이는 펀드시장에 큰 영향력을 주고 있는 펀드가 존재하고 있다고 판단된다. 둘째, 펀드 네트워크에서 자산 운용사의 군집 현상은 경제 상황에 따라서 변화하고 있음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 순자산가치로부터 도출된 네트워크의 군집 현상은 주식시장의 변동성에 유의미한 영향을 주고 있음을 확인하였다.
Abstract
This study uses network methodology to examine the clustering of equity funds in the Korea stock market. Unlike a number of previous studies that used the econometric model to analyze the role of fund managers in financial markets, we use the complex network method. In this study, we use the net asset value (NAV) of the fund to measure the similarities between Korea equity funds and to extract a minimum spanning tree (MST) network from a complete graph. Previous studies, which used individual firms in the financial market, showed a power-law distribution in which hub characteristics were observed; in particular they showed a phenomenon of clustering by industry sector. Here, we consider whether the network of Korea equity funds follows a power-law distribution, especially whether it affects the cluster phenomenon of the asset management company in the different economic states. Our results indicate that the structure of the fund network follows a power-law distribution regardless of the sample period. Especially, we find that the grouping phenomenon of asset management companies in the fund network varies during different financial states.
